ECHAMP 2022 winning team snags more than $8,400 worth of prizes

November 14 2022 - After rounds of fierce competition among 16 seeded community Esports teams, Grayback Esports (GBE) Infinity was crowned champion at ECHAMP Grand Finals 2022 held yesterday evening at Downtown East, D’Marquee, taking home the grand prize worth $8,490.

The team of five emerged victorious in the 74-team Mobile Legends: Bang Bang (MLBB) competition, which started in October 2022. Team ButWhy came in second place while Team Madge Slayers took third place.

This year's Esports tournament – the second edition–raised over $25,000 prize pool with the support of long-term partners such as Steelseries, APOL, Philips Monitors and more.

"We improved a lot throughout the tournament and emerged the ECHAMP champions, despite mistakes made during our play that caused some differences in the team. However, we have an excellent coach who provided us with good moral support and built trust amongst the team members.” Voon Jia Hao, Captain of GBE Infinity, 17-year-old Temasek Polytechnic Student.

DIVERSITY IN THE GAME

ECHAMP is one of the key programmes of the 2021 memorandum of understanding signed between NTUC Club and The Gym Esportscentre. One of the objectives of the partnership is to introduce national-level tournaments, masterclasses

and industry workshops, plus learn about responsible gaming, and grow the Esports community.

This year's participants are between 14 and 42 years old – from students, social workers to pilots and flight attendants. The evening also saw some 200 attendees attending the Grand Finals at Downtown East to cheer for their favourite teams. The tournament, which was opened to the public, was streamed live on The Gym, nEbO and U Sports social media platforms.

"It was great to see so many esports enthusiasts come together for ECHAMP 2022. Esports is fast becoming one of the most popular activities both youth and young adults engage in. ECHAMP 2022 has shown that there is great demand and interest for community esports events. Together with our partner NTUC Club, we hope to organise more esports events and provide more opportunities for both recreational and aspiring gamers to hone their skills." Marc Lim, Chief Strategy Officer and Co-founder, The Gym Esportscentre.

The signature event was graced by Mr Vikram Nair, Member of Parliament for Sembawang GRC and Adviser for Admiralty Grassroots.
