Downtown East Brings Communities Closer Through Fun and Celebration

NTUC Club remains committed to meet the social and recreational needs of members as it celebrates the completion of Refreshing Downtown East project.

Singapore, November 2018 – NTUC Club reaffirmed its mission to meet the social and recreational needs of union members as it celebrates the completion of the
$200 million Refreshing Downtown East project.

The completion of the project is timely as NTUC Club will celebrate the 30th anniversary of Downtown East on 10 November with a day of music, food and carnival fun. NTUC Club Chairman and NTUC Secretary-General Mr Ng Chee Meng will grace the celebrations, together with former NTUC Club Chairmen and CEOs.

Bringing communities closer through fun and celebration

In the last 30 years, Downtown East has undergone several transformations to keep pace with the changing needs and aspirations of members.

“Over the last 30 years, Downtown East has evolved from a humble chalet to a lifestyle destination for our members. Many of our leaders and staff, both past and present, have worked very hard to bring fun into our lives. Even as our need for fun changes over time, one thing remains constant – NTUC Club’s commitment to stay relevant to our members’ needs,” said Mr Ng Chee Meng, NTUC Club Chairman and NTUC Secretary-General.

The refreshed Downtown East continues this mission to serve its members and guests through the upgraded facilities. This includes the nature-inspired D’Resort, expanded water park Wild Wild Wet, enhanced retail, dining and entertainment mix at
Market Square, and MICE facilities for corporate and consumer events known as MUCE.

Since completion of the Refreshing Downtown East Project earlier this year, the lifestyle destination has seen close to 20% increase in footfall, with an average of 1.1 million guests monthly.

Events and programmes are organised all year round to facilitate engagement and building of bonds with members and guests. Come 2019, guests can look forward to many programmes and events, including a family and baby carnival, an expanded Cosfest convention, and also Halloween celebrations for the whole family. These events will be free for guests to enjoy, or at an affordable fee to encourage members’ participation.

“Downtown East has always been known for great programmes and activities. With the refreshed Downtown East, we want this to be a place for members to relax and have fun with their loved ones and create lasting memories. We will continue to bring programmes and offerings that are relevant and affordable for the communities of the Labour Movement,” said Mr Lim Eng Lee, NTUC Club, Chief Executive Officer.

Staying true to commitment

Dedicated to serving members from all walks of life, NTUC Club will continue its annual contribution of $1.5 million to the Family Fun Fiesta. Every year, over five runs, some 10,000 lower-income union members get to enjoy a day of fun programmes with their families at Downtown East, including entry to the water park, at no cost to them.
NTUC Club will be looking at more ways to engage lower-income members.

Other communities of the Labour Movement will also ramp up their engagement activities at Downtown East. Driven by nEbO, U Live and U Sports, these programmes are often co-organised with leaders of the communities, and are targeted at the youth, active agers and sport enthusiasts. Some of the annual signature events include nEbO’s youth bazaars, the 3-on-3 Floorball by U Sports, and U Live’s Walk for Wellness.
