Downtown East Wave Hello Art Showcase
The whimsical geo-modular structure resembles a maze from afar and it draws you in at the Open Plaza 2 at Downtown East. It evokes curiosity, inviting one to explore the interesting nooks and crannies of the 3.6-m high and 6-m wide outdoor art installation that's aptly named, Wave Hello.
It's the collaborative brainchild of Space Objekt studio (Tina Fung) and artist Aeropalmics (Dawn Ang). Presented by Downtown East, Wave Hello is the latest art installation to set foot at the lifestyle destination, following the successful six- month exhibition of Lite On! last year.
While Wave Hello provides a highly Instagrammable backdrop, its creation is no doubt clever, meaningful and purposeful. Inspired by the gentle waves, the installation evokes a sense of curiosity to explore new ways of seeing – as well as reminding people of the joy of discovering unexplored spaces.
DAY AND NIGHT FORMATIONS
With its soothing pastel colours, the installation offers a sense of calm and openness. Once inside Wave Hello, one will uncover different optical perspectives of the environment around them. The installation forms alternate formations of shadows and shapes from the arcs and curves at different times of the day and night.
Wave Hello is now on display. Admission is free. The artistic project is supported by the National Arts Council (NAC). Downtown East is part of the NAC's islandwide Arts and Culture Nodes Network, developed for people to come together to participate in, enjoy, and experience the value of the arts in their neighbourhood.
The arts is one of the cornerstones of Downtown East's programmes. The others are music, food and sports.
STORY BEHIND HELLO WAVE
Wave Hello took several months to conceptualise and build. Artists Tina Fung and Dawn Ang, who had worked (separately) on a past project, felt that there was synergy between them. They decided to collaborate on Wave Hello.
Dawn says: "The concept of Wave Hello is to rediscover curiosity.....find the day-to-day things."
"The message we are trying to relay is the sense of awe and wonder through a lighthearted installation," adds Tina. "We hope to see you at Wave Hello!"
SPACE OBJEKT
Founded by Tina Fung and Ash Razaque in 2017, Space Objekt is a Singapore-based boutique design studio that is reshaping the understanding of built environments and reimagining spatial experiences. Dedicated to making art accessible to all, Space Objekt redefines spaces with its creativity and dexterity in this new visual language.
From small scale props and immersive larger-than-life installations to interior design, the studio has been involved in a wide variety of projects across Asia and Europe, with brands like Summer Well Festival (Romania), Gucci, and Adidas. @space.objekt
AEROPALMICS
Aeropalmics captures the different shades of the human condition more gracefully than most. With her eyes open to the unending sensory magic of the natural world, Dawn produces pieces that oscillate between astounding details and playful abstractions.
Her work has been showcased at prominent fine art galleries and international festivals, alongside commissions for Google, Facebook, and various international brands. @aeropalmics
