nEbO Youths Spreading the Lunar New Year Joy to NTUC Health Beneficiaries
Last Christmas, a group of like-minded youths got together under nEbO’s “Bake for Good” initiative to bake cookies for elderlies at various eldercare facilities and beneficiaries of NTUC Health. This time round, for Lunar New Year, the young bakers are gathering more friends to scale up their baking efforts. “Bake Some Goodies” is a self-initiated care initiative by the youth to touch and engage more elderlies across the island!
“Lunar New Year is very special to me because it’s a time when families gather to celebrate and catch up with one another over meals and new year goodies. I’m glad that nEbO has provided me with this platform to share my passion and to Do Good for the society. I am encouraged by the success of our Christmas baking activity and hope that this time round, we can bring more joy to more seniors at our NTUC Health facilities by scaling up our efforts with more volunteers,” said Ms Glennis Ang, 23, nEbO leader from National University of Singapore who is leading this project.
Glennis and 62 enthusiastic nEbO youth bakers and volunteers worked in shifts to bake the new year cookies on 5 and 6 February at Downtown East’s and Institute of Technical Education College West’s baking studios.
“Volunteerism is very close to our hearts and it’s great to have this opportunity to show our care for these seniors. We took care to reduce the amount of sugar in the recipe and these cookies are baked with no preservatives, so they are healthier and suitable for the elderly,” said Ms Tay Ming Yi, 23, nEbO leader from Singapore Institute of Technology.
Giving Together as part of the NTUC Family
“It’s great to see our nEbO youths come together with the local MPs and grassroot leaders to spread some festive cheer to our seniors from NTUC Health. Although there are still some Covid-19 restrictions in place for the safety of everyone, I’m glad that this didn’t deter our volunteers from spending time and effort to bake and distribute these cookies for the elderly. I hope that they can feel the warmth of our gesture during this Lunar New Year season,” said Mr Ng.
The cookies distribution continues on 10 February at various NTUC Health centres, such as NTUC Health Active Ageing Hub (Kampung Admiralty) with Ms Mariam Jaafar from Sembawang GRC, and NTUC Health Senior Activity Centre (Redhill) with Mr Melvin Yong from Radin Mas SMC.
The nEbO youths will be distributing the cookies together with local MPs and grassroot leaders to various eldercare facilities and beneficiaries of NTUC Health across the island, kick-starting on 8 February. On that day, Ms Yeo Wan Ling, Labour Member of Parliament and Director for NTUC's Women & Family Unit and U SME, will join NTUC Secretary-General Ng Chee Meng and the youth volunteers in distributing a batch of cookies to NTUC Health’s Senior Day Care Centre in Pasir Ris.
